The Significance of the Goose and Gridiron in the Formation of the Premier Grand Lodge of England

by Syed Haasan on Feb 03, 2026

The term “Goose and Gridiron” is often associated with Freemasonry due to its connection to the formation of the Premier Grand Lodge of England in 1717. However, it is important to note that the term refers to a specific event rather than a widely recognized symbol within Freemasonry.

The story of the Goose and Gridiron dates back to June 24, 1717, when four London Lodges gathered at the Goose and Gridiron Alehouse in St. Paul’s Churchyard. The purpose of this meeting was to establish a governing body known as the Grand Lodge. This event is considered significant because it marked the formation of the first Grand Lodge in England and the beginning of the modern era of Freemasonry.

During this meeting, the four Lodges elected Anthony Sayer as the Grand Master, who then presided over the new Grand Lodge. The Goose and Gridiron Alehouse is said to have been chosen as the location for the meeting due to its proximity to St. Paul’s Cathedral, where the Lodges traditionally held their annual feast on the day of St. John the Baptist. The decision to hold the meeting at this venue was likely a matter of convenience rather than a symbolic choice.

While the Goose and Gridiron event holds historical significance for Freemasonry, it is not a widely recognized symbol within the fraternity. Freemasonry primarily uses symbols such as the square and compasses, the apron, the trowel, and the pillars, among others, to convey its moral and philosophical teachings.

It’s worth noting that Freemasonry’s symbols and practices can vary across different jurisdictions and interpretations, so there may be additional local or regional associations with the term “Goose and Gridiron” within Freemasonry. However, the historical event itself does not involve a widely recognized symbol or ritual within the broader scope of Freemasonry.
