How to maintain your silver jewellery

by Syed Haasan on Feb 03, 2026
How to maintain your silver jewellery

Silver rings are popular for their classic style, but some people may notice an unexpected issue where the silver looses it’s shine. Let’s explore why this happens and what can be done to prevent it.

Composition of Silver

Before we can begin to explain how to maintain you precious silver jewellery, it’s good to understand what makes it.  Sterling silver the material used for many rings, is made up of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. While this mix makes the metal strong, it’s also the reason for the silver to lose it’s shine. The culprit here is the copper content.

Why Does It Happen?

When silver comes into contact with moisture, air, and chemicals, it undergoes a natural process called oxidation. Copper, being more reactive, tends to oxidise faster. This results in a green substance called copper oxide forming on the ring’s surface.

What Makes It Worse?

Several factors can make the green discolouration worse:

  • Humidity and Moisture:
High humidity and prolonged exposure to moisture can speed up the oxidation process.

  • Chemical Exposure:
Lotions, perfumes, and cleaning agents contain chemicals that react with the copper, causing the green tarnish.

  • Skin Acidity:
The pH level of your skin matters. People with higher skin acidity may experience more noticeable discolouration.

Preventative Measures

  •  Protective Coatings:
Apply a clear nail polish or a jeweller’s anti-tarnish coating on the inside of the ring to create a barrier, preventing direct contact with the skin.

  •  Regular Cleaning:
Clean your silver rings with a polishing cloth or mild soap to remove tarnish and reduce the chance of discolouration.

  • Avoid Chemicals:
Minimise contact with chemicals and remove rings before applying lotions or engaging in activities involving potentially corrosive substances.

MAINTAINIng your sterling silver jewellery

Elevate the longevity and radiance of your cherished sterling silver rings with these indispensable tips. Your rings not only serve as a mood-booster but also add character to every outfit. To ensure you enjoy their splendour for years to come, consider the following recommendations:

  •  Individual Storage:
Store each sterling silver ring individually in pouches or cases within a cool, dry environment. This prevents scratches and minimizes exposure to elements that could contribute to tarnishing.
  •  Airtight Protection:
Combat humidity and oxidation by sealing your sterling silver rings in airtight bags. This extra layer shields your precious pieces from environmental factors that accelerate wear and tear.
  • Polishing Techniques:
While 925 Sterling Silver is robust and doesn’t require frequent polishing, when you do, opt for up-and-down strokes instead of circles. Circular motions can exacerbate tarnishing or trap dirt, affecting the overall appearance.
  • Gentle Cleaning:
Avoid chemical liquid jewellery cleaners that may be too harsh. Instead, use a simple microfiber cloth or a specially designed silver polishing cloth treated with gentle, appropriate chemicals.
  • Mindful Removal:
Take off your rings when engaging in activities involving strong heat, sunlight, harsh chemicals, water, or excessive sweating. This precaution ensures your rings are shielded from potential damage.
  • Dry Policy:
Keeping your sterling silver rings dry is a universal rule for maintaining their pristine condition. Moisture can accelerate tarnishing, so be mindful to dry your rings thoroughly if they come into contact with water.

Adopting these simple measures ensures your rings remain vibrant and free from unwarranted discoloration or tarnish. It’s all about proactive preparation and consistent maintenance to preserve the enduring beauty of your treasured pieces.
